A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO KISHOREGANJ
The history of Kishoreganj is very ancient. In ancient times Kishoreganj was included in the kingdom of kamarupa. In the eleventh and twelfth centuries, Pal, Varman and Sen kings ruled in this region or some parts of it. After that, small independent states were established under the Coach, Hajong, Garo and prisoner of state. In the sixth century Nandakishore son of Sri Krishnadas Pramanik, a resident of Batris established a ganj on the bank of the Brahmaputra river; The name Kishoreganj originated from this ganj in course of time. Narasunda river flows through kishoreganj. Kishoreganj is an ancient city and district headquarter is about 145 km far away from Dhaka. There are 8 municipalities, 13 upazilas, 108 unions and 1,745 villages in this district. There are many important installations in Kishoreganj. Asia’s biggest Eidgah Ground ‘Sholakia’ is located in Kishoreganj. Historical Shahidi Mosque and Pagla Mosque are also located here. Thousands of people come and pray in these two mosques. There are also many religious shrines including the largest Kalibari Pujamandap. The well known Government Gurudayal College, Waleenawaz Khan college and the Ishakha international University are located in Kishoreganj. Ishakha’s fort in Jangalbari, Karimganj and Shah Mahmud Mosque in Egarosindur, Shiva temple of Chandrabati located on the Phuleshwari river side are also in Kishoreganj. The birth place of Chandrabati, the first female poet of Bengali literature is also in Kishoreganj. This Kishoreganj is the birth place of Child literary Upendra Kishore Roy Chowdhury and Sukumar Roy. Bangladesh first acting President Shahid Syed Nazrul Islam and former President Mohammad Zillur Rahman were born in Kishoreganj district. His excellency Md. Abdul Hamid, the current President of Bangladesh, also a worthy child of Kishoreganj. Rivers: Old Brahmaputra, Meghna, Kalni, Suti, Narasunda, Ghorautra, Dhanu, Boulai & Arial Kha etc. Administration: In 1860 Kishoreganj was established as a Sub-division under the greater Mymensingh District and it was turned into a district in 1984. Kishoreganj Municipality was formed in 1869. Economy:The driving force of the economy of Kishoreganj is significantly dependent on the haor. The haors are abundant with various types of fishes, which can fulfill the country’s demand on a large extend. Moreover, jute, rice and many other vegetables are also produced in Kishoreganj which are exported outside the country fulfilling the demand of the country. Weather : The climate of Kishoreganj is warm. The average temperature is 24.7 degree celsius. There is more rainfall during the summer compare to winter. The average annual rainfall is 2250 mm.
